Last Saturday I did something that I have wanted to do for a long time… I went to my first pottery class! The class was put on through Verlocal, a social platform built to bring people with similar interests and hobbies together. They have a variety of events, everything from perfume making to cooking classes.
The class was held at a small art studio on Sutter Street, SMAart Gallery and Studio. It was an early morning and the sun was shining through the windows of the studio as I walked in. The gallery was filled with different artists’ work and the studio was in the back. After some light conversation over coffee and donuts, Jackie, our instructor, began demoing how to set up and center your clay. She made it look effortless, but when I tried to do the exact same thing myself, it was a disaster. This was my first time throwing clay or making pottery on a clay wheel, so I had no idea what I was doing… But I got better as I made more and more pieces. In the end, I made a cup and a bowl. I’ll have to show you all on my Instagram when they are all finished!
I’d have to say that I will definitely be trying pottery class again. It’s something that you have to try more than once to get good at, and I just love the look of handmade pottery- every piece turns out different.
I’ll definitely be taking another class with Verlocal as well. Next time I’m thinking of sharpening up my cooking skills?! Hope you all are having a fabulous day.
