I remember when I was younger, I would shop for all the “trendy” items that were often times from fast fashion brands. I would want the newest and hottest “looks”, no matter what the quality. As a result, I had an “ever-rotating” closet that wouldn’t last me more than a season, let alone more than a year. Oh, how times have changed… Now, on the brink of my 30’s, I find myself gravitating towards nicer quality items that I can use forever. Don’t get me wrong, I always love a good thrift haul – as you can see from my Poshmark, but I always find diamonds in the rough when I do thrifting.
Investing in your wardrobe can enable you to incorporate pieces that are high quality and that may be more expensive up front but that have a great cost per wear. Investing in anything can be risky (but y’all know your girl LOVES takings risks :), especially if it’s a fashion piece you may not be sure about that’ll stay in fashion for years to come. But there are reasons why you will never regret it!
Here are a few reasons why you’ll never regret investing in a beautiful bag or piece for your wardrobe:
The quality is there forever
An investment bag of high-quality means that the quality is there forever. There’s a reason why certain kinds of vintage bags last decades, or why maybe your mother or grandmother had the same bag for years! Leather is a great place to start when thinking of materials (not for my vegan friends out there, but it lasts long). When we traveled all over Italy last year, I fell in love with the craftsmanship of the Italians. Leather bags made in Italy, such as the pieces available on Mirta.com for example, are one of the best investments you can make as they are known for their incredible quality and style. To keep your bag in tip top shape, remember little things make a big difference, like keeping it on your lap or on your chair rather than on the ground, keeping it protected from the rain or snow under your coat or umbrella, keeping it clean, and polishing it when and as needed.
For most people, investing in a beautiful handbag means going for timeless style so that you’ll love it for years to come and that makes the cost per wear so worth it. I now have pieces that I have own for YEARS because they are made out of high-quality sustainable fabrics and the style is timeless. That means that you want to avoid investing in a trendy style and instead opt for a classic style (although trends do come back – this takes time). This makes sure you’ll continue to love your bag and be happy with your investment.
You can pass it down
Having something special that you love and that is true to you is a special something to have that you can pass down later to loved ones. A high quality and beautiful bag (especially if it is timeless!) will be appreciated for a long time, and when you are done using it you can pass it down to a family or friend who will continue to show it love. And it doesn’t have to just be a bag, either. I recently went through some of my grandmother’s old jewelry that she passed along when she passed, and I created an amazing frame out of the pieces that I wouldn’t necessarily wear but that I love.
You can resell it for money
If you don’t want to keep the bag or piece for sentimental reasons such as passing it along to a loved one, you can resell it. A beautiful handbag can be resold when you are done using it so that you can recoup some of the money that you invested in it. This is all the more reason to care for your handbags as well so that you can list the quality as ‘excellent’ if and when the time comes to sell it! It can be helpful to check in on the price of your handbag once you are notice you aren’t using it as much so you can get an idea whether it is worth selling and re-investing your money in a bag that you love even more. A classic example many economists use is a bag from Chanel. You may pay $4,000 for a bag and usually the value increases by around 5-10% every year you own it. Convinced yet?
The other things to pay attention to for your investment bag are color and size, as those can greatly affect your feelings towards the piece after you purchase it.
I hope you all learned some great tips about investment pieces, and maybe you’ll think about what legacy and style you want to carry around from here on out 🙂
