Bali has become a popular hub for travelers due to the slow, relaxed lifestyles and the opportunities for a thrilling adventure. However, the tourist areas can sometimes lack the relaxation and tranquillity that you hoped to find on the island. Escape the crowded streets and bustling tourist hotspots and immerse yourself in the side of the island loved most by locals.
Travel like the locals
There are so many ways to get around the island, from car rentals to motorbikes. However, the method most popular with locals is scooters! Scooters offer a fun and efficient way to get around the island, navigate the dirt roads and get to the nearest beach – just remember to wear a helmet. These days it is easy to find your way around the roads, simply use Google Maps or download the available offline map for when you don’t have data. Don’t be afraid to ask locals for directions too, they are often more than happy to help!

Surf the quietest coastlines
Bali is a popular destination for surfers due to the incredible waves, suited to beginners and experts alike. There is no better location for surfing than Uluwatu, located on Bali’s southern coast. Balangan Beach is a great place for beginners due to the many surf schools and hits. The beach boasts an expansive stretch of hot white sands and picturesque green seaweed covering the rocks. Suluban Beach is a great location for more advanced surfers. The location’s nickname is Blue Point. Travelers should follow the narrow path down to the sand and swim out for the best waves. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants in this area to replenish after a day in the sea.
Hike to see astonishing natural wonders
Bali is a great place for adventure, and there’s no adventure like hiking through nature and seeing some of the most awe-inspiring views in the world. One great place to go is the Banyumala waterfall in the north of Bali. You can park at the base, then take a short walk through the jungle before taking a dip in the refreshing natural waters. Mount Batur is popular amongst locals and seasoned travelers for an unforgettable sunrise experience. Hike for two to three hours to the summit to be rewarded with some truly memorable views. However, travelers should always check local volcano activity alerts before setting off on this hike.

See the Lempuyang Temple
Many locals can agree on the fact that the Lempuyang Temple is one of the best spots in Bali to experience the island’s rich culture and traditions. Arrive early in the morning and see Mount Agung lined up perfectly between the main gates of the temple as the sun lights up the mountains – be sure to take your camera! Leave a few hours to have fun exploring the incredible temple grounds by foot.
